A Letter to Our Unborn Son

standard June 15, 2015 Leave a response

We never even thought of doing anything like this until we saw the linkup with Modern Dad Pages for #letterstomychildren – obviously, we don’t have the pleasure of having ours physically yet, but we’ve been through a lot together, the three of us. So this is potentially the first of a few letters to baby Mason, even though he hasn’t graced us with his presence yet.

Dear Mason,

You’re not even able to breathe yet. You’ve not seen the outside world; you haven’t laid your eyes on either of us yet. You aren’t even born, but for the last eight months you have been the basis of everything that we have done, spoken about, planned, postponed, eaten, drank and thought about. From the moment that Mum went to that hospital and we were told we were expecting you; you have been our entire world despite how unexpected your arrival was.

You’re in for quite a ride kiddo and we know we are too. We’re super excited to meet you, but we’re also a little nervous about what the future holds. Your Mum and Dad are people who like to know exactly what is going to happen and how, and in your own beautiful wonderful way you have ruined all of that. We’ve seen pictures of you, but that won’t compare to when we finally get to hold your tiny hands and cuddle your tiny frame. We couldn’t be happier that you’re coming and wanted to let you know that you are, already, one of the strongest little people we’ve ever known.

You have overcome so many odds just to be here with us today. You are going to be born to parents who were told that they couldn’t conceive you naturally. You survived pretty major surgery when your Mum was just six weeks pregnant. You have been through more before you’ve even been born than most people have in their first ten years on this planet. You are extraordinary and both of us are massively grateful that you’re on the way and as an added bonus, you’ll be here for our wedding.

But, life is indiscriminate in what it throws at you. It isn’t fair, but that is how it will be.

We wanted to let you know that you are strong enough to overcome every obstacle that the world wants to throw at you. You are strong enough to become anything that you want to be. You are strong enough to ask us for help when you need it.

You are already loved beyond any comprehension and that will only increase when you get here.

Now hurry up and be born already. We’re getting a little impatient.

Lots of love,
Mum and Dad oxo
